Frequently Asked Bee Removal Questions
Are you licensed and insured?
Bee Busters Inc is licensed and insured. We are licensed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and BBB accredited with an A+ rating. We are certified with a Class 7A Pesticide Applicators license. Bee Busters Inc. has been a family-owned business proudly serving Richmond VA since it was established in 1986.
How long does the bee / wasp / hornet removal process take?
Typically, we can treat and remove any stinging insect or nest the day we come out. Also, we always call a few days later to check on you to make sure you are happy with the service and results.
Why are bees/hornets at the base of the tree in my yard but no nest is observed?
Usually a stressed, weak, or damaged tree will begin sapping. This dark wet looking area on the base of the tree attracts house flies, butterflies, yellow jackets, bald faced hornets, and European hornets.
European hornets can actually chew at the bark to make it sap more or keep a sapping spot flowing. They will usually guard/hoard this spot and chase off other insects attracted by the sweet smell of the sap. You can’t effectively put a pesticide on that sapping spot to stop them from coming to it because the smell of the sap is strong and it is just drawing everyone in.
Also, the sap will just run over the top of any pesticide and soak it. Control results will be severely lessened by this. If the location of the sapping spot is low enough you can cover it with rocks or gravel to stop them from accessing it and feeding there. Once it is no longer the “grocery store” then they will go elsewhere. If the sapping spot is higher up you may want to confer with an arborist to see what can be done to make the tree stop sapping.
What is a good alternative to a pesticide for bee/wasp activity?
Peppermint oil mixed with water in a sprayer or an old Windex bottle would be great for that. Bees and wasps dislike the smell of peppermint. It is just a repellent and will not kill anything. It is a cheap DIY method to keep them from hanging out at doorways, front door overhangs, or decking areas you want to entertain at or work from.
The downside is that it does not hold up to weather well and would need to be reapplied every 3 or 4 days. If you were to put 15 or so drops of peppermint oil in a one-gallon water sprayer, you could spray the area you want to stop their hunting or harborage activity.
Set the gallon sprayer down and then 3 or 4 days later. Shake it up and spray that area again. Just leave the sprayer sitting there at the location and take a couple of minutes to reapply when needed.
Do you provide any other pest removal services?
Yes, while Bee Busters Inc focuses primarily on stinging insects in the spring, summer, and fall we do help customers that need wildlife removal such as squirrels, bats, birds, and mice/rodents.
With the use of one-way gate, we can get squirrels, bats, and birds out of structures.
A point of note here is that if wildlife has had its young in a structure you cannot gate them out until the young are weaned and are considered adults. For example bats have their pups (usually 2 per female) in May and June so if it takes 5 weeks to fly and 3 more weeks to wean then 8 weeks total until they are considered adults. So, we would not be able to one-way gate them out until September 1st of that year. That has been our policy for many years and now it is has become Virginia law.
It is advised that all home owners do a walk around inspection of their rooflines, soffits, dormers, and siding looking for holes, gaps, and missing trim in October. Wildlife will be looking for nice warm harborage as soon as the temperatures drop in November and December. Home owners should do a quick once around the house inspection again in spring as wildlife will then be looking for somewhere safe and warm to have their offspring. These are the 2 times of the year they really want to share your home with you!
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash or check or we can send you an electronic invoice through Paypal which accepts Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Venmo and Apple pay. This option does add additional cost to your invoice.
Do you warranty your work?
Yes, for yellow jackets, bald faced hornets, or any treatment service where a chemical is applied into a cavity of a structure for extermination (European hornets, red wasps, German yellow jackets) we provide a one-year warranty to that serviced area.
For treatment / removal of an external wasp nest like black wasps or paper wasps we provide a 6-month warranty for those. For any wildlife
Exclusion from a structure we normally warranty those for a year as long as we can access and seal up
Any possible secondary entrances that structure may have.

What are the bees that are going into the holes in the fascia board behind the gutters and along my roofline or in my deck and deck railings?
Carpenter bees look like bumble bees but their tails are shiny since they don’t have hair on their rear end and a bumble bees rear end looks fuzzy. Carpenter bees chew a ½ inch size hole into the soft pine fascia boards behind gutters and along rooflines and they follow the grain creating tunnels and laying eggs. You typically see the yellow splatter on the siding or window just under/outside of the carpenter bee hole. This is the chewed wood pulp the female is kicking out of the entrance hole.
The carpenter bee males do not have stinger and they have a white patch on their face. The males are territorial, and you see them swooping, diving, and chasing each other, trying to claim an area where there is an active female. The carpenter bee females face is all black. She does have a stinger but she is not human aggressive although she could sting you if you pinched her or stepped on her.
Every female is laying up to 6 eggs in those tunnels so don’t let them go untreated. It will get out of hand in just a couple of seasons. Their main season starts in late March to early April and lasts until the heat comes in about mid-June. The eggs that were laid in the spring will hatch and you will see carpenter bees emerge once the temperatures come back down in late September but this is just small amount of activity.
There might be some new chewing or flying around the entrances but they will soon hibernate in the tunnels and wait for the main season the following spring.
Why are there holes in my yard with bees hovering above?
If you are seeing dozens to hundreds of holes in your yard with dozens to hundreds of bees hovering 8 to 10 inches above them you are looking at ground-dwelling solitary bees. Some people call them spring bees, digger bees, miner bees, or even stingless bees.
Although the males are stingless the females do have stingers but their stingers are short making it is difficult to penetrate skin. They are not normally human-aggressive but it is possible to get stung if you pinched or stepped on a female.
They arrive in the spring and their season is about 4 to 6 weeks. They are great pollinators. They like dry sandy soil so if you wanted them to go elsewhere you would need to heavily water the area and keep it wet in the spring.
